You will embark on a classic coastal-to-highland road trip, taking you from the tropical north all the way to the deep desert of the south.

Here is your flexible, stage-by-stage itinerary:

Etapa 1: The Lush Interior and Kalandula Falls in Malanje

  • The Route: Head east from Luanda into the Malanje province.
  • The Highlight: The spectacular Kalandula Falls. Spanning 400 meters wide with a 105-meter drop, it is one of the largest waterfalls in Africa. You can take a guided hike down through the tropical forest to the base of the falls to feel the thundering spray.
  • Logistics: There are simple lodges nearby for overnight stays. Road conditions can be tough, so take your time returning toward the coast.

Etapa 2: Journey South through Kwanza Sul

  • The Route: Drive south from Luanda, crossing the Kwanza River and entering the province of Kwanza Sul.
  • The Highlight: This route offers beautiful coastal and river scenery. You can make flexible stops to see the Binga Waterfalls (Cascatas do Binga) and pass through coastal towns like Porto Amboim and Sumbe.

Etapa 3: The Historic Coast of Lobito and Benguela

  • The Route: Continue your drive south along the coast into the Benguela province, arriving at the sister cities of Lobito and Benguela.
  • The Highlight: In Lobito, you can explore the Restinga peninsula, known for its beaches and relaxed vibe. In the Benguela area, a highly recommended stop is the Parque Natural Regional da Chimalavera (located near Baía Farta), where you can take a mountainous trail to observe elegant gazelles, springboks, and monkeys.

Etapa 4: The Climb to the Highlands of Lubango

  • The Route: From Benguela, you will turn inland and drive up the escarpment into the cooler, high-altitude province of Huíla to reach the city of Lubango.
  • The Highlight: Use Lubango as a base to rest and restock your expedition supplies. You can explore local landmarks like the Cristo Rei monument and the breathtaking Tundavala Gap, a dramatic gorge that drops 1,000 meters down from the Chela Massif.

Etapa 5: The Winding Descent of Serra da Leba

  • The Route: Depart Lubango and drive west toward the coast to reach the Namibe province.
  • The Highlight: You will navigate the famous Serra da Leba pass. This engineering marvel features 15 kilometers of tight, zigzagging hairpin bends that wind down the mountain escarpment. As you descend, you will experience a dramatic ecological transition from the lush highlands into the arid, dry plains of the desert.

Etapa 6: The Spectacular Dunes of Iona National Park

  • The Route: Drive south from the coastal city of Namibe, passing through the fishing town of Tômbwa, to enter Iona National Park.
  • The Highlight: Iona is Angola's oldest and largest national park, characterized by massive, shifting sand dunes and vast desert plains. Guided by your 4x4 operator, you can spot desert-adapted wildlife like the oryx and springbok, and search for the ancient, bizarre-looking Welwitschia mirabilis plant. You will set up wild campsites under the vast night sky.

Etapa 7: The Secluded Beaches of Tiger Bay (Ilha dos Tigres)

  • The Route: Continue your rugged 4x4 journey traversing the deep desert of Iona toward the remote Atlantic coastline.
  • The Highlight: Tiger Bay is a truly remote wilderness. To reach the island itself, you will need to organize a boat crossing. Once there, you can explore the secluded beaches and a haunting abandoned fishing village that was swallowed by the desert sands and isolated by the sea.

Important Logistics for this Route: Driving the entire length of the country requires a sturdy, fully equipped 4x4 vehicle and a highly experienced driver or guide. You must be entirely self-sufficient for the southern desert stages, carrying ample fuel, water, food, and recovery gear.
